Summer in Bloom

This summer we're spotlighting the floral beautification of campus maintained by the award-winning UNT Grounds Crew. This week we bring you the Barbary Fig or Prickly Pear which can be found near the southwest side of the Language Building.

  • Fun Fact: The oil of the Barbary Fig contains high levels of vitamin E, K, and beta-carotene. A small cooperative of women in Southern Morocco have been making products from the plant, turning it into an important source of income for many poor, rural, communities (information from picture this).
  • Symbolism: Hope, protection, and longevity
  • Difficulty Rating: Resistant to drought, like sufficient sunlight, and are easy to care for
